Minden Hills Mayor Brent Devolin will seek a second term at the helm of council Devolin filing nomination papers on May 7.

“This afternoon I filed as a candidate for mayor of Minden Hills” Devolin wrote in a social media post. “I thank those that supported my nomination filing and hope that I will earn the backing of Minden Hills residents to continue the good works of the present council for another four years.”

At press time Devolin was the only candidate registered for the mayoral position.

Long-time Ward 1 Councillor Lisa Schell has filed to run as deputy mayor. For Ward 1 which has two seats at the council table registered candidates as of May 9 were Jennifer Hughey  Clayton Cameron and current Ward 3 Councillor Jean Neville. Ward 2 Councillor Pam Sayne had filed papers to reclaim her seat and in Ward 3 the former township of Snowdon Russ Duhaime had filed papers to run as councillor.

Minden Hills Councillor-at-large Ron Nesbitt has filed nomination papers to reclaim his position.

In Algonquin Highlands as of May 9 Deputy Mayor and Ward 2 Councillor Liz Danielsen and fellow Ward 2 Councillor Lisa Barry had filed papers to reclaim their positions. In Algonquin Highlands the deputy mayor is not elected by the public but rather by council. Julia Shortreed had registered to run in Ward 1.

The deadline to file as a candidate for October’s municipal elections is Friday July 27 at 2 p.m. Nomination papers and candidate information can be found on each of the lower-tier townships’ websites or at the municipal offices. Unofficial lists of candidates are also being kept on each of the websites.
