Intoxicated driver kills moose

A moose is dead and a woman charged with drunk driving after a collision on Highway 118 in the early morning hours of Sunday Sept. 27.

Haliburton Highlands OPP say officers responded to a report of a vehicle hitting a moose just west of Kushog Lake Road in Minden Hills at approximately 3:50 a.m. Sunday.

They found a minivan with severe damage to its front end and the moose dead on the shoulder of the road.

Officers detected “a strong smell of alcohol” on the breath of the driver leading to a roadside test which the driver failed. She was arrested and transported to the OPP detachment in Minden where she underwent intoxilyzer tests.

The 35-year-old woman from Clearview Township has been charged with driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in her blood.

She will appear in court in Minden on Nov. 4.
