From years heading up the county fair board to volunteering with the Minden Health Care Auxiliary and the United Church Women longtime resident Maxine Snell was named the 2018 Minden Hills Senior of the Year during a June 14 council meeting.
“She’s volunteered with all kinds of organizations and associations for more than 50 years was the treasurer of the the UCW group she volunteers with the UCW and the United Church pastoral care committee” said Mayor Brent Devolin. “She’s a volunteer at the hospital auxiliary and has received her 15-year pin.”
Snell also competes in the Ontario Seniors Games where she’s competed in multiple events.
“She hosts card games at her parties at Hyland Crest and those parties have raised more than $3500 and she’s working towards a $5000 goal” Devolin said.
Snell who worked at a number of local business as well as Archie Stouffer Elementary School was a longtime volunteer with the Minden Agricultural Society and chaired the Haliburton County Fair Board for 16 years. She’s hosted many pie-making bees at her home for the fair board’s annual roast beef barbecue fundraiser.
“She’s very deserving of recognition and has been for many many years” said Devolin as he presented Snell with flowers and plaque to loud applause from the audience.
“Thank you very much everybody” Snell said. “This is a big surprise for me. I never ever thought why [granddaughter] Jennifer wanted me to come . . . I really appreciate it.”
