The following are brief reports of items discussed during a June 21 meeting of Algonquin Highlands council.

The township will issue a survey for users of the Dorset branch of the Haliburton County Public Library located within the Dorset Recreation Centre about how they might like to see that space used.

As reported earlier due to low circulation numbers at the branch council is considering changing the nature of the space including the possibility of having a book drop-off/pick up location as well as space for studying community activities etc. While the facility is owned by the township the library is operated by the Haliburton County Public Library board.

The survey will be issued online and councillors agreed that paper copies should also be made available at the branch.

Councillors heard a presentation from Sonja Addison and Amanda Duncombe-Lee of the U-Links Centre for Community-Based Research regarding a community service learning program whereby Trent University students earn credit by working on community service projects such as vehicular traffic counts or the planning and creation of community gardens for example.

“We don’t want to limit what is possible we’re being very open-minded” said Addison the organization’s director.

Municipalities as well as community organizations can avail themselves of the program.
