The Minden Minor Baseball League is now officially being run by Minden couple Craig and Tammy Smith.
Lovers of sport and community volunteers the couple are running the league as a not-for-profit and thought it was a logical step forward after helping the township run the youth softball league for the past 10 years Craig said.
“The township had mentioned last year that they would like someone else to take over the league possibly as a group or something so since we pretty much did most of the grunt work we thought we would take over the league and run it as a non-profit group” he said.
This isn’t the Smiths’ first rodeo.
For the same amount of time they’ve helped with minor baseball the couple were running the adult lob ball league held at the same athletic venue at the back of S.G. Nesbitt Memorial Arena.
Although the two registration dates in April have passed Craig said there are still opportunities for registration which is different from other years.
“One change is that we will not have a cut off date for kids who missed the sign up dates. If you want to play ball we will find a spot for you” he wrote.
Registration for players from three to 17 years old (as of June 1) is still $40 and includes an end-of-year barbecue a team and individual photo team shirt and team hat for players signed up before May 1 a spot to play and a medal in the Dawson Hamilton Memorial Tournament.
“We are looking for coaches and the only criteria is that you have to have a police check” he said.
The league is asking for shirt sponsors at $100 for 10 or $200 for 20. Shirts get divided throughout all of the teams. All money collected will be going into the league.
“We are excited to get started and to get some new equipment ordered” he wrote.
Smith was appreciative to the township for this opportunity
“Special thanks: to the township for allowing us the use of the diamonds for the first year and the equipment” he said.
