Molly’s starts anew as Market Bakery

By Thomas Smith

A beautiful display of cookies, cupcakes, and baked goods of all types greet customers as they approach the counter. Delicious smells of freshly made bread waft through the air.

This June will mark the 14th anniversary of Molly owning and operating Molly’s in Minden. Molly’s Bistro Bakery has now changed to Molly’s Market Bakery.

For around two years, Molly’s Bakery Bistro has been for sale.

“We are selling the whole building too,” explained McInerney. “It’s not just the business, so that is a big nut.” In addition to the bakery and store space, there is a four bedroom apartment included with the property.

“You could easily convert it into two apartments if you wanted to,” said McInerney.

“I love it. It’s fun,” said Molly McInerney. “I was born here. My dad was a teacher and a principal up here back in the 40s before they changed it to a continuation school. Up until that point, it went to grade eight before students had to go to Lindsay for high school.”

McInerney left the area in the 70s and when she came back, she worked odd jobs, including one for the Minden Times.

“This became available and it was a bakery when we bought it and we converted it into a restaurant and a bakery.”

“Times have changed sadly. Everyone is having the same trouble with staffing and I couldn’t do it,” said McInerney. “This was what I was doing during COVID-19 as well, so I just expanded on that. I had to make the decision to make a move,” said McInerney with a laugh.

“We have carry-out cuisine and we do lunches as well. Stuff like sandwiches and salads and soup and savoury ham pies and then a selection of baked goods as well.”

McInerne has expanded the frozen food options to include chicken parmesan, pizzas, wings, wings, macaroni, potatoes, rice, and veggies.

“I will change it up as well with other things,” said McInerney. “On the bakery side we have increased it with cupcakes and we’re selling bread now. Different items like danishes and croissants.” “I see an idea and go ooo, I could do that.”

“Meat pies have traditionally been our biggest seller. Lately, with the new expansion, pizza has been flying out as well. But our meat pies have always been our mainstay. I have also gone to smaller portions so seniors don’t have to eat them all week long. They can eat it for one meal or a meal for two. The portions are smaller than they used to be.”

“It adds more flexibility,” said McInerney. “It’s still work, but it’s not crazy work. I’m still here everyday and we’re still making things everyday but for a different purpose. Instead of me making things for you you are taking it home and cooking it yourself.”

Last week, McInerney added cheesecake bites to the wide range of items for sale. “I saw the idea dn thought I could do that,” said McInerney.

“I got the bug and I’m hoping somebody else will get the bug,” said Molly with a laugh.

“People have always enjoyed our cooking here. Everything is from scratch and we try our best to make it as tasty as possible. It’s not processed food. We don’t add additives and palm oil and stuff like that. If you make it at home, I make it the same way. Except I make it better.”

“You want to buy a restaurant?” asked Molly. “All the tables are in the shed, they’re ready to move back in here.”
