A settlement has been found between former Kilcoo Camp director David Latimer and J. Doe #1 and J. Doe #2, who, in late July of 2023, brought forward sexual assault allegations against the director.
As of Dec. 12, 2024, the lawsuit has been resolved by mutual agreement of the parties.
The well-known director, who spent his career at Kilcoo Camp in Minden, was accused of sexual misconduct that arose in the 1990s and early 2000s. Two cases were put forward in the summer of 2023, with the plaintiffs identified as J. Doe # 1 and J. Doe # 2. Due to the ages of the plaintiffs at the time of the alleged incidents, both cases received a sealing and non-publication order on their names.
“Over time and throughout their young adulthood, the effects of the psychological
trauma inflicted by Latimer’s sexual assault intensified,” reads the claim brought against Latimer on July 27, 2023.
Latimer had been the director of Kilcoo since 1985, as well as the director of community life at Greenwood College School in Toronto, where he left in 2023 following rumours that he violated boundaries with a number of minor students at the facility.
The former camp director denied all sexual misconduct allegations included in the lawsuits, and none of the allegations brought forward in the lawsuit were tested in court.
At this time, no details of the settlement have been shared, but Kilcoo Camp has released a formal statement on their website, as well as a sexual harassment and abuse policy, and an anti-bullying policy.
The message also reminded the public that Latimer stepped down as camp director in light of the allegations, and has since been replaced by Patrick Tingley. “David Latimer will not be involved in Kilcoo Camp in the future,” reads the statement.
“The camp and all involved have learned from, and are grateful for the frank and positive discussions that have led to this outcome,” the public notice said. “Kilcoo remains committed to ensuring that staff, campers, and all those who spend time at Kilcoo in the future have a fulfilling and safe experience.”
At this time, the parties to the litigation will have no further comment.
