With Doug Ford sweeping the province blue in a historic third consecutive win for the Conservative Premier, Laurie Scott has once again secured her position as MPP for the Haliburton Kawartha Lakes Brock riding.
The 98 polls across the region closed at 9 p.m. on Feb. 27, and within minutes, the results started rolling in online.
Voter turnout in the riding was pegged at a mere 48.91 per cent – only a slight increase from 2022’s 48.14 per cent. Despite all the buzz leading up to this year’s election, there still seemed to be a low interest when it came to actually casting a ballot.
Scott secured her seventh term with a margin of 14,818 votes, totalling 26,506, according to Elections Ontario. Liberal candidate Alison Bennie came second with 11,688 (22.91 per cent), NDP’s Barbara Doyle snatched third with 6,993 (13.7 per cent) and local Green Party rep Tom Regina finished fourth with 2,602 votes (5.1 per cent).
When it came to fringe candidates, New Blue’s Jacquie Barker garnered 1,223 votes, Brian Kerr of the Ontario Party received 926 votes, Gene Balfour, an Independent, earned 426 votes, Libertarian Zachary Tisdale got 385 votes and Bill Denby of the Freedom Party managed 278 votes.
Scott celebrated with her supporters in Lindsay following the win, sharing that her strategy of going door-to-door as opposed to participating in candidates meetings and debates seemed beneficial.
