In a warmup to the upcoming single A championship the Haliburton Red Hawks junior girls’ soccer team fell to the Fenelon Falls Falcons Monday.
The Red Hawks were coming off a 3-2 victory in their previous game against St. Thomas. “The last game they played really well they had more chances on net” said team advisor Paul Klose. “In this game we were just not getting the chances on net. The other team was just a little more aggressive to the ball.”
Haliburton was playing the game without any subs and Red Hawk Chloe Samson was playing in net for the first time ever. After allowing an early goal Samson made four consecutive saves before Falcon Sydney Paulson finally found the back of the net on a breakaway.
Klose said he was particularly impressed by the play of defender Helena Haywood who handled the ball well in tight spaces and played a solid positional game.
Red Hawk Nicole Cox had the team’s best chances on offence leading a couple rushes up the field. Klose also added Natalia Gimon to his list of the game’s top performers “She’s pursuing the ball and anticipating well” he said.
Fenelon forward Hanna Jackson had a hat trick in the win.
Klose said that the team will work on transitioning the ball from the defence to the midfield to the forwards in their practice tomorrow as they prep for the Kawartha Single A Championship match. The Red Hawks will be heading to Peterborough Friday to face either LCVI or I.E. Weldon Secondary School in the final.
