No one likes a loss but the Red Hawks varsity soccer coach Bob Schmidt liked what he saw in his players in their game against the Cobourg Collegiate Institute Wolves this past Thursday at the Gary G. Brohman Athletic Field in Haliburton.
The Hawks lost 6-0 to quick and slick-passing squad from Cobourg.
This is a vast improvement to their last home game against Crestwood Secondary School when the goal difference was close to double.
Schmidt liked his team’s hustle and the apparent progress from the team’s other losses.
“We’re improving as the game goes along” he said. “Finding open men. Containing defensively as opposed to just chase the ball.”
He adds they’ve emphasized position to their young players the vast majority in Grade 9 and 10.
It was evident the Hawks forwards were outsized and outpaced at most of the positions.
To the team’s credit the players never stopped running even when the game was out of reach.
Being in position and patience is key for this team he said.
“We lunged at the ball a lot last game defensively. I think we tried to get the ball and just missed. So now we are focused on containing the man staying in front of the man and not just lunging at the ball” he said.
The team’s next home game is Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. All games are subject to change.
