The Sears stores in Haliburton County – the appliance andfurniture store in Haliburton and the catalogue pickup company inMinden – are not affected by the widespead closures and layoffsthat Sears Canada announced last week.

“The biggest thing I want to put out there is we’re not goinganywhere” Adrian Vargas who owns the Sears store in Haliburtontold the paper.

The same goes for the Sears catalogue pickup depot in Mindenwhere owner Rawnie Moore said she is continuing to operate.

Sears announced June 22 that it will close 59 stores acrossCanada laying off approximately 2900 workers. That day the company was granted protection from its creditors andits stocks were halted as it undergoes a restructuring. The storeclosures represent about a third of the company’s total retailcontingent in Canada.

Vargas stresses that in Haliburton County it’s business asusual.

“We are very much open” he said.
