Kindergarten students at Archie Stouffer Elementary School had a sweet adventure on March 3 when parent-volunteer Audrey Collins visited for a maple tree tapping field trip on school property.
“Audrey taught us how to identify maple trees based on their bark because there are no leaves in the late winter/early spring” said teacher Corinne McArthur. “She also showed us the tools needed to tap trees collect and create syrup.”
McArthur said students have been reading fiction and non-fiction books and watching short documentaries “to learn the answers to their wondering as they investigate this inquiry.”
Besides learning about the maple syrup collecting process students had the chance to try a sweet treat in the form of maple taffy.
