Hawks push Wildcats in shootout

It was a classic shootout between the Red Hawks senior boys’ basketball team and the visiting I.E. Weldon Wildcats on Monday Jan. 23 in Haliburton.

Lots of scoring inside the key and outside the arc in this Kawartha West High School Basketball League game. There were highlight reel scores and in the trenches type of buckets. The audience was left without anything to cheer or get excited about.

When the dust settled the league leading and undefeated Wildcats came out on the winning side over the red and white.

Coach Paul Longo focused on the positives and how his team pushed the visitors more than any league opponent.

“We had a few lapses on the defensive end that led to some easy buckets for the Wildcats. Overall we played well and we were missing three players to injury. Offensively we put up 49 points against a team who I don’t think has allowed more than 40 in a league game so that was encouraging” he wrote in an email. “All things considered a decent effort particularly in the second half where we got back to within eight points. Final score 62-49.”

The team is 3-2 in the league heading into the exam break and is 9-7 overall this season.

Players of the game:

McKay Coneybeare – 20 points eight assists four boards

Sam Longo – 16 points six assists two boards

Collin Martin – four points six boards

Sage Christiano – two points eight boards
